- [Brian Draper](https://www.nembba.org.uk/roll-of-honour/brian-draper/): NEMBBA is saddened to learn of the death of our vice-chair and vice-president Brian Draper. Brian had served on the NEMBBA committee for many years, and stewarded at all our contests. Brian also served for a number of years on the Midlands Regional Committee. Brian was mainly associated with the Bestwood Black Diamonds Band, where he played principal euphonium for them in the championship section for many years before later taking over as conductor. In subsequent years, he conducted many of our North East Midlands bands. As a music teacher, Brian taught many pupils to play brass instruments (both in the […]
- [Entries Now Open For Our Entertainment Contest](https://www.nembba.org.uk/contest/entertainment-contest/entries-now-open-for-our-entertainment-contest/): Entries are now open for NEMBBA’s entertainment contest, which is being held on Sunday 27th September 2026 at The Whitworth, for all bands, including unregistered bands. Band are invited to perform a 20 minute entertainment programme, with prizes for the first three bands and the highest placed band in each section. If the weather remains fine, the contest will be held outdoors in the venue’s gardens, otherwise we will use the venue’s ballroom (where we have previously held our own-choice test piece contest). - [Dates Set for our Annual Area Test Piece Contest](https://www.nembba.org.uk/contest/february-contest/dates-set-for-our-annual-area-test-piece-contest-3/): We are running our annual area test piece contest next year on Saturday 27th February and Sunday 28th February, at our usual venue, The Post Mill Centre in South Normanton. As this year, the Third and Second Sections will play on the Saturday and the Fourth, First and Championship Sections will play on the Sunday. The sections for training and unregistered bands to perform a 20 minute entertainment programme will also be on the Sunday. Entry forms will be available on our website after our A.G.M. in October.

Brian was contest secretary of both NEMBBA and the Midlands Area for many years until his retirement in 2011. Brian was also the secretary of the former Ransomes band and contest secretary of the old Butlins contest. We send our condolences to Jane and his family.

- [Alan Cheetham](https://www.nembba.org.uk/roll-of-honour/alan-cheetham/): The death has been announced of Alan Cheetham. Alan died peacefully with his family around him at the Kings Mill hospital on January 8th 2025. Alan was the band manager of The Riddings Band during their most successful years from 1989 to the early 2000s. During this time the band rose from the Midlands 3rd Section to the Championship Section in 2000. Alan was one of the main driving forces behind this success, working tirelessly as part of a very successful committee. John Slater served local bands (principally Matlock Band) as a player and conductor for over 70 years and was our chairman (and chairman of the Midlands Area Committee) for over 40 years, running all our meetings and officiating at most of our contests. Haydn Cooper was a member of Huthwaite Silver Prize Band for over 80 years, including 50 years as their musical director, and received a diploma of honour from the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 2001 in recognition of his work teaching hundreds […]

Our previous best entry was 23 back in 2006.

- [NEMBBA Youth Band](https://www.nembba.org.uk/youth-band/nembba-youth-band/): Since 2016, Martin Heartfield has run a series of one day courses for young brass players as part of his NEMBBA Youth Band initiative. Examples of previous courses can be found on Facebook® at https://www.facebook.com/NEMBBAYB. With the reduced provision of music within schools, these courses do provide a unique opportunity for our young players to spend a day playing music with their peers and to receive some tuition from some of our top brass players. - [Long Service Awards](https://www.nembba.org.uk/contest/february-contest/long-service-awards/): NEMBBA offers long service certificates to players (and conductors) of our member bands (those who have entered our February contest) for 25, 50, 60 and 75 cumulative years of membership of brass bands (this includes time playing in school and non-contesting brass bands and with non-NEMBBA bands). Awards can be made retrospectively if you have, for example, players who have been playing for 30 years. Eligible players should be nominated by their band secretary and their certificates will be presented at the contest.

Midlands Brass Band Association was formed at the Labour Club, Mansfield on Saturday. Thirty-four bands, the majority associated with collieries in Notts. and Derbyshire, together with several subscription bands, are interested in the venture and 19 were represented at the meeting. Mr. J. Levick (Shirebrook) was appointed president and Mr. S. Jennings (Bolsover Colliery) secretary.
